Originally built by Boeing at Renton as a B-29A-45BN and taken on charge with USAF 25.4.45 with serial 44-61748. Served at Birmingham, Alabama, Muroc Lake, California and then to Davis Montham 11.45 for storage until 6.51. Then to Luke, Arizona, Travis, California, Kadena, Okinawa and back to Davis Monthan 10.54. Then to Nashville, Tennessee, Tinjer (for TB-29A conversion review), Yuma County, Arizona. To Naval Weapons Test Facility, China Lake, California 11.56 for gunnery towed-target work. Stored until 1979 when Jack Kern and his company Aeroservices of Tucson was contracted to get the B-29 flyable and to get her safely to Duxford. Regd 27.9.79 (CofR No: G-BHDK/R1) as G-BHDK to Imperial War Museum. Ferried China Lake to Tucson 11.79. The flight to England starting 17.2.80 from Tucson, had the following legs; Tucson to Flint, Michigan, Flint to Loring Air Force Base in Maine, Loring to Gander, Newfoundland, Gander to Sonderstrom, Greenland, Sonderstrom to Keflavik, Iceland, Keflavik to Mildenhall Air Force Base in England, and finally Mildenhall to Duxford 2.3.80. The CofR was not Cld until 29.2.84 as WFU. The aircraft is now firmly imprisoned inside the American Air Museum building at Duxford. |
