OTHER REPORTS

Initially, I used this section to report on visits to my local airfields and strips. Unfortunately, time pressures have not allowed visits as regularly as I would have wished. Therefore, instead of showing reports of almost ancient history, I have decided to use the section mainly for reporting what I have seen during visits anywhere (ie not just around the Cambridgeshire locale) and to include a few photographs of aircraft, simply because I like them !

I have nevertheless retained the local Raptor Centre Enstrom hybrid report, despite its age, simply for the oddity value !The Enstrom hybrid went on to be used as a fund-raising item for the AA when they initially sponsored the medical emergency helicopter scheme - now seeking funds from elsewhere.

I have also now included my summary of Wallis Autogyro production. I first produced this for an article in AIR-BRITAIN DIGEST in 2001, so any references to "current" are related to Summer 2001. This listing may help those attending the Wallis Day activities at Shipdham on Saturday 20 July 2002.

ENSTROM F-28 RELIC NEAR SOMERSHAM

[NB: Originally compiled in 1999, since when the hybrid has moved on - the following details are however retained for the historic record]

f280001.jpg

The Raptor Foundation is an organisation caring for injured or ex-captive birds of prey and is based at Woodhurst on the B1086 between St Ives and Somersham in Cambridgeshire. The proprietor was an ex-RAF engineer who was paraplegically injured falling from an aircraft on the ground, but has since obtained a rotary licence in the USA. As well as a passion for raptors, he is raising funds to acquire a helicopter (probably now to be a Gazelle rather than the originally intended Enstrom) to be used to quickly ferry injured birds back to base as a means of reducing their time, and hence stress, in transport. As part of this fund-raising, he has acquired the mortal remains of F-28 G-BATU & G-JDHI which have been amalgamated to produce a static display item to provoke interest both at the Centre and at various fetes and shows. Indeed it is planned to exhibit the F-28 at the Royal Tournament.

The hybrid which went for painting in Peterborough last year. It returned on 18 April and is now all-yellow with MERCY FLIGHT titles and the Foundation's motif on the nose.

rap10001.jpg

Just to complicate things even further (if this is possible) it has now been painted with the registration G-BACH ! Parts of this were also acquired from Corley near Coventry alhough the main parts are as described above. It is visible from the B1086, but if you like anything with wings, there is a large collection of owls and hawks etc (some cannot be returned to the wild and are well looked-after here, while others are being readied for release) and entry is recommended. Most afternoons there are demonstrations of owls and raptors flying to command. Admission fee by donation.
